Cuban-American singer and cabaret act reputed for her residency on the Clive Adam Show

The broadcaster plus critic Clive James cherished words – written and voiced – and enjoyed nothing more than rotating around on his tongue the name of Margarita Pracatan, who has died of center failure aged 89 and has been resident singer on his ITV display in the 1990s.

Approximately novelty act and parody, the particular Cuban-American vocalist sat alongside sadistic Japanese game shows in James’ s witty mix of highbrow plus lowbrow culture to sing substantial hits such as Stevie Wonder’ h I Just Called to Say I Love A person in her heavily accented Hispanic vocal style – described simply by one critic as “ approximately Speedy Gonzales and Carmen Miranda” – while wearing a brightly colored feather boa and often animatedly supplying the keyboard accompaniment. Aware of her humor pull, she performed two variations of Lionel Richie’ s Hello – one “ romantic”, one “ disco”.
